    Description

A ceremonial medicine pipe with bear paw design and a medicine feather with bear paw design are atop burnt work designs that J Clifton Polchies, Mi'kmaq has placed atop this commercially made larger wooden box.  There are medicine feathers on either side of the box and a traditional Wabanaki trifoliate design at center of a double curve is on the front of the box.  Front is a "negative" design with the double curve and leaves left "unburnt" and the background and accents are done with burnt work.
Burnt work is also called  pyrography - dictionary definition
"Pyrography is the art of decorating wood or other materials with
    burn
    marks"
As a traditional art of the Wabanaki, burnt work has been used for at nearly 2 centuries and perhaps even prior to European contact...  The earliest burnt work design I have seen was on a paddle was dated to 1850 and have been told of others that were even earlier.  Wooden objects as well as birch bark items were sometimes decorated using the tips of burning sticks etc.
This commercially purchased wooden box has had the all the burnt work designs placed on it by the Mi'kmaq artist, J Clifton Polchies.   It has a small brass metal clasp on the front and similar brass hinges on the back.
As you may observe the box has a "defect" on the top - a ragged cut/tear repaired with wood putty.  The cut is about 1.5" long and 1/8"-1/4" wide.  It is not obvious, but noticeable.  For this reason the price of this box is discounted.  This was the way the commercial box was delivered to Clifton and he put his designs on it anyway.  Price would have been .75 if the damage/repair was not there...
This  rectangular wooden box is 9.5" long,  6" deep and 3.25" high.  - One of the largest boxes by JC Clifton that I have offered.   It would make a great desk top box for holding scissors, pens, paper clips, erasers etc... It could hold letters, invoices etc - or it would make a great jewelry/trinket box.
It could also hold dried herbs for smudging or medicine and even a small medicine feather.... Or whatever you have ....
